Introduction

This simple and easy Marinara recipe takes half an hour from start to finish and uses ingredients you probably have on hand in your pantry.

Ingredients and Preparation

  • 1 28 oz can San Marzano Tomatoes

  • 1 small or 1/2 large yellow onion - small dice

  • 4-5 garlic cloves - minced

  • 1 small carrot - peeled and small dice (optional)

  • splash red wine (optional)

  • 1 tbsp dry parsley

  • 1 tsp dry oregano

  • 1 sprig fresh basil (or substitute dry)

  • 1/4 tsp dried pepper flakes

  • olive oil

Cooking Instructions

  1. Cook onions, garlic and carrots in a small bit of olive oil in a heavy pot on medium low until onions are translucent. Stir occasionally.

  2. (Optional) Add a splash of red wine, reduce.

  3. Add tomatoes, dry herbs and pepper flakes. Simmer for at least 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  4. Add basil (if using fresh), remove from heat.

  5. Season to taste.

Cooking Tips and Tricks

  • This sauce freezes well and benefits from additional simmering if you have the time.

  • Add fresh vegetables like mushrooms or summer squash if you have them on hand.

Presentation and Serving Suggestions

  • I love this sauce with my Chicken Parmesan or with homemade meatballs.

  • Great weeknight sauce!

  • Garnish with fresh grated parmesan if you have it on hand.
